Mike Katz

Mineral Development

Dr Mike Katz is a consultant in international mineral development and former senior lecturer in Applied Geology from 1971 – 1988, director Key Centre for Mines International 1988 – 2009, University of New South Wales (UNSW) , Sydney Australia. He has over 60 years extensive experience in geological and mining education, training and as an expert for academia, government and industry and has worked with AUSAID, UNDP, WB, ADB and other international agencies on over 70 projects in 25 countries including major projects in Laos, Vietnam, Mongolia and China as well as professional development training for TATA Steel, India. In 2008 he was invited by the East Timor Government to lead a workshop on mineral policy. His international experience starting up with an assignment for Canadian International Development Agency for the development of the first Department of Geology, University of Sri Lanka from 1967 – 1970. From 1960 – 1967 he worked in Canada in mineral exploration for Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting and as a geologist for the Geological Survey of Canada and the Quebec Government. On retirement from the UNSW from 2010 – 2021 he continued as a consultant for the UNDP in Cambodia and undertook mid term reviews for the APEC mining task force and the Australian Government International Mining for Development Centre as well as serving on the selection panel of the extractive industry Australia Award Africa program and as a consultant for IISD on future mining. From 2010 - 2022 he was a reviewer of IUCN UNESCO World Heritage geological nominations.
